Yoko Taro, the mind behind Nier: Automata, recently experienced a humorous twist of fate when an AI urged him to cease his social media musings and instead focus on crafting games with clearer narratives. This unexpected feedback came as a result of Taro’s foray into the trend of utilizing an AI roast bot to sift through his social media activity and deliver some biting commentary, which he generously shared for everyone to enjoy.
The roast bot's opening line took a jab at Taro's signature moon mask, humorously critiquing his frequent tweets about ramen as if they were culinary masterpieces. It noted that his posts resembled the disorganized thoughts of an artist lost in the game development world. The bot cleverly suggested that if Taro devoted less effort to crafting intricate game mechanics, perhaps fans wouldn't find themselves needing a guidebook to grasp the complexity of his storylines.
This seemingly harsh critique appears to stem from a player who perhaps only engaged with a portion of Nier: Automata's narrative, missing out on the many endings that would provide clarity. Nevertheless, Taro seemed unfazed by the roast aimed at his ramen-related content, simply captioning the interaction with a wry acknowledgment of the temporary nature of such humor. It's likely that he has encountered far worse criticism throughout his career.
Since the phenomenal success of Nier: Automata seven years ago, Taro has produced a mobile spin-off, remastered the initial game in the series, and developed a trio of turn-based card games. However, he has yet to create a direct sequel to that beloved action-themed narrative. Fortunately, not all hope is lost. Earlier this year, Taro hinted at the possibility of a third main installment in the Nier series. This speculation was further fueled when a series producer disclosed that key figures from Automata had come together for a project that could either be a continuation of Nier or venture into an entirely different territory.
Though the upcoming chapter is enveloped in uncertainty, enthusiasts can find comfort in the possibility that Nier 3—or whatever the final title may be—might indeed come to fruition. In the interim, the enchanting soundtrack of Nier: Automata can serve as a reminder of the journey so far, much like the aging of fine wine enhances its allure. Taro himself has reflected on the profound influence of Neon Genesis Evangelion on his work, suggesting that the beloved RPG serves as a reimagining of the classic story rather than a wholly original concept.
