Since its initial announcement four years ago, the sequel to Dirty Dancing has faced numerous delays, much to the chagrin of hopeful followers. Nevertheless, there could be a spark of optimism on the horizon as Jennifer Grey, one of the film's stars, offers a somewhat encouraging update regarding the much-anticipated follow-up.
At a recently celebrated gala for her film A Real Pain, Grey spoke with journalists about the status of Dirty Dancing 2. While she refrained from making specific promises, she emphasized the necessity of confirming correctness before advancing forward. She mentioned her anticipation for a time when everything concerning the sequel is properly settled.
Originally announced in 2020 with a target release in 2024, the movie's timeline shifted due to industry strikes, pushing it back to the summer of 2025. Notably, director Jonathan Levine, known for Warm Bodies, was attached to the project in 2022. Nevertheless, as of now, a definitive release date remains absent, and production has yet to officially commence. With Grey hopeful that issues will soon be resolved, fans remain optimistic about positive developments in the near future.
The beloved 1987 classic, Dirty Dancing, centers around Frances "Baby" Houseman, portrayed by Grey, who falls for a captivating dance instructor while on vacation with her family. Their romance faces obstacles due to social differences, making the film a poignant reflection on love and class divides. It has attained a reputation as one of the premier iconic movies of the 1980s, known for its unforgettable quotes and exceptional soundtrack.
Although no official details about the sequel's storyline have emerged, Grey provided hints during an August 2022 interview, suggesting that the narrative will revolve around Baby’s return to Kellerman’s resort for a fresh summer filled with dance and romance. Given the extensive delay and Grey’s comments about waiting for the details to be finalized, script modifications seem plausible.
In terms of returning talent, Grey will reprise her iconic role, and the film will honor the legacy of Patrick Swayze, who portrayed Johnny Castle. In her conversations, she noted the unmatched nature of Swayze's performance and expressed a desire to have Harry Styles join the cast. Whether Styles will step into the role of Kellerman’s new instructor remains to be seen.
Fans can currently revisit the original Dirty Dancing, which is accessible for free on ITVX in the UK. Stay tuned for exciting updates on the latest films making their way to audiences soon.
